Despite negative press from television programs like “Canada’s Worst Cell Phone Bill” broadcast on CBC, the big cellular phone companies continue to burn their own customers with outrageous mobile phone bills that reach into the thousands. One Calgary man opened his bill to find that he owed Virgin Mobile, a division of Bell Mobility, $7,763.70.
Jason Boutang went to France between July 1st and 7th and failed to get a mobile roaming data package for his iPhone before he left. It can be argued that he used his phone irresponsibly while away, streaming a Calgary rock radio station, using a web based translator application and sending text messages, the high cost of such services is still outrageous.
According to Jason, the same amount of data usage would have cost him under $500 if on the Rogers network.
This story goes to show just how outrageous cellular roaming charges are to Canadians. Something needs to change.
